In June, members of the Hobart-William Smith community and Hope House will band together to help out one of their own.
On Sunday, June 13, a fundraiser, Joggin’-4-J’Lon, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. to raise money for HWS housekeeping manager Deborah Woody and her family. Woody’s nephew J’Lon was recently diagnosed with a rare case of cancer. A 4th grader at North Street School, J’Lon has to receive treatment five times a week in Rochester to combat the cancer.
“I would like to bring as many people as possible together to offer up support and prayers for J’Lon, while in the meantime, raise enough money to offset the costs that Woody family are going to face,” says Alex Cragg ’13, a Geneva native and Hope House resident. Cragg and Director of Conferences and Events Erica Cooney-Connor are spearheading the fundraiser.
“Once Erica found out about J’Lon, she knew that it was important for the Colleges to do something,” says Cragg, who knew Woody and learned of J’Lon’s story from her work at Conferences and Events.
Woody is “a very important part of the HWS community whose daily duties allow the campus to actually function,” says Cooney-Connor. J’Lon has also spent time on campus, participating in the summer day camps on campus.
And because Cragg will be moving into the Hope House in the fall, it seemed only natural to do something to help, she says.
As a member of the theme house, Cragg will work to raise awareness of cancer through various events on campus, as the Hope House has for the past several semesters, with events like Relay for Life, Penguin Plunge, Kick Away Cancer and Daffodil Days.
During Joggin’-4-J’Lon, participants will jog — or bike or walk — along the Seneca Lake waterfront at the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. Baskets, T-shirts, baked goods and bracelets will be raffled and sold at the event. Everyone is welcome to take part, whether they want to jog, bike, walk, or just donate their time to the cause.
Conferences and Events will act as headquarters for Joggin’-4-J’Lon. Pledge sheets are available in the office located in Delancey House on S. Main Street. Donations can be mailed to an account at the Seneca Falls Savings Bank: Jog-for-J’Lon c/o Mark Miller, Seneca Falls Savings Banks, P.O. Box 1050, Geneva, NY 14456. Other donations, such as food and supplies, can be sent to Delancey House. The event will move to the Bristol Field House in case of rain. All volunteers and participants from the campus and the community are welcome.
