Bryan McCorkle ’11 has made the Northeast College All Star rugby team. Composed of the most talented players in the region, the Northeast RFU Collegiate All Stars recently competed in the National Collegiate All Star Championship at Infinity Park, in Glendale, Colorado. McCorkle was a starter and the team’s efforts resulted in one win, one loss.
Playing four different positions for the HWS Rugby Club, the New York City native credits his versatility as his biggest asset. Of the practice matches the All Star team had, McCorkle, the only player chosen from a Division III school, says they “have been a real test of team cohesiveness.”
McCorkle notes his mindset at HWS was focused on assertive leading, where he rushed to score fast and play pressure defense. With the All Star team, he says, “It’s about putting the entire team in the right spot and setting up defensive and offensive patterns early on by communicating.” This increased level of communication has improved his overall awareness and eliminated his ball watching. The Northeast RFU Collegiate All Stars included players from Stony Brook, Columbia, Yale, and several other schools.
