The William Smith field hockey team remained unbeaten with a 6-0 win over visiting Oneonta State on McCooey Field this afternoon. Sophomore Annie Kietzman led the charge with a five-point day.
Less than five minutes into the match, first-year Melanie O’Connor fed Kietzman on the left side. She fired a shot past the Red Dragons’ goalie for a 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, first-year Taylor Cappello drove home a pass from junior Kiersten Hamilton for a 2-0 advantage.
In the 16th minute, Cappello scored again, this time set up by senior Emily Atwan, for her fifth goal of the season. Atwan wrapped up the first half scoring with a straight on shot, assisted by Hamilton.
In the 37th minute, Kietzman and O’Connor teamed up for another goal. This time, O’Connor collected a rebound and passed to Kietzman on the left side of the cage. Hamilton closed out the scoring, driving home a pass from Kietzman in the 45th minute.
Sophomore goalie Taryn Little started and played 52 minutes, making two saves to earn the win, while senior Chelsea Snyder played the final 18 minutes, stopping the lone shot she faced. Oneonta senior goalie Leslie Dauphinais saved 10 of the 16 shots she saw.
William Smith outshot Oneonta 23-5 and held a 9-5 advantage on penalty corners. The Herons, who improved to 4-0, have now won at least four straight games to start a season in four consecutive seasons.
William Smith will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 14, when the Ithaca Bombers visit McCooey Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
