Joseph Rivera-Ramos, a member of the Hobart Class of 2004, pitched a plan for designating Route 14 from Geneva to Watkins Glen a scenic byway at a meeting of more than 40 people. Audience members included First Ward City Councilor Jackie Augustine, Geneva Town Supervisor Mary Luckern, and City Manager Rich Rising.
Rivera-Ramos believes such a designation could boost local tourism and economic development.
“This is a place worthy of scenic byway status,” he said in the Aug. 25 Finger Lakes Times. “It will give the region the opportunity to morph into the cultural anchor it is well on its way toward becoming.”
According to the article, Rivera-Ramos' presentation was the culmination of a year-long study of the road, which he conducted as an intern for the Coalition on Geneva Safety. He has also completed a graduate program at Columbia University's School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
