Led by senior Lauren Carlson‘s third place finish, the William Smith golf team took third in the William Smith Invitational at Clifton Springs Country Club. Thirty-three golfers competed in the 36-hole event on the par 72, 5,800-yard layout.
On Saturday, Carlson carded an 83, tying St. John Fisher’s Jackie Norwark for third place. On Sunday, Carlson negotiated the course in 84 strokes, including a pair of birdies on the back nine, while Norwark posted an 88 to drop back to fourth place.
Heron seniors Katrina Carey and Brittany Furlong joined Carlson in the top 20, finishing tied for 11th and 18th, respectively. Carey recorded a first round 96 and improved by five strokes in the finale, while Furlong had rounds of 98 and 101.
Ithaca won the team title by 32 strokes over the Cardinals (726-758) with William Smith 10 strokes further back. Nazareth (826), Le Moyne (837), and Elmira (857) rounded out the field.
St. John Fisher’s Alexandra Battle outdueled the Golden Flyers’ Michelle Van Slyke for individual medalist honors. Van Slyke held the first round lead with a 79 with Battle one stroke back. Van Slyke went out in one of the day’s first groups and turned in an 80 for a 36-hole score of 159. Battle, who played in the final group of the tournament, produced a 78 to win by a single stroke. She played the final nine holes in 38, including a pair of birdies, for the lowest score of the weekend on the stretch run.
Van Slyke and teammate Jenee Vanderstyne registered a tournament best four birdies apiece, while Battle, Carlson, and Ithaca’s Jackie Young each logged three.
William Smith will be back on the course on Oct. 2-3, when the Herons compete in the Martin/Wallace Invitational hosted by Cortland.
