Neil Laird, assistant professor of geoscience, and collaborators from the University of Illinois had an article recently published in the September issue of Monthly Weather Review. The article was titled “Mesoscale Vortices Embedded within a Lake-Effect Shoreline Band”.
The article uses meteorological radar measurements to investigate small-scale vortex circulations that developed along an intense lake-effect snow band. The vortices had lifetimes of 2-5 hours and resulted in significant variations of the winds and snowfall rates along the band. A Web animation of the radar observations can be viewed at http://www.atmos.uiuc.edu/~jgrim/weather/animate/spb011403.htm
