The 16th-ranked William Smith field hockey team posted a 3-1 Liberty League victory over Rochester under the lights of McCooey Field. Junior Kiersten Hamilton led the Herons with a goal and an assist.
William Smith (9-1, 2-1) got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first six minutes of the match. Senior Emily Atwan posted her team-leading ninth goal of the season, redirecting a cross from Hamilton just 4:31 into the game. Less than a minute later, sophomore Annie Kietzman took a diagonal pass from senior Sarah Gall and lifted it into the upper left corner of the cage.
The Herons completely dominated the first half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 18-1, but a chance late in the half allowed Rochester (3-5, 0-3) to get on the scoreboard. On the visitor’s only penalty corner of the first 35 minutes, junior Darragh Kerr inserted to junior Allison Beardsley, who fired a shot from the left side of the circle, just inside the arc for her fourth goal of the season.
In the 49th minute, William Smith got the goal back when Hamilton gathered her own rebound and fired in her sixth goal of the season.
The Herons finished with a lopsided 35-2 edge in shots, while sporting a 17-2 advantage in penalty corners.
First-year goalie Madison Wagner kept the Yellowjackets in the match with 18 saves, while Little had one stop.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 2, when third ranked Messiah visits McCooey Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
