The Hobart College soccer team scored three goals in the first half to defeat visiting Clarkson 3-0 in a Liberty League match played at Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen earned their first league win of the season and improved to 7-6-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the league. Clarkson is now 6-6-2 overall and 1-5-0 in Liberty League play.
The Statesmen got on the scoreboard just 4 minutes, 38 seconds into the game, when senior Justin Dotzman scored his first goal of the season. Just 47 seconds later, first-year Shayan Mosavi made the score 2-0. Dotzman sent a pass ahead to Mosavi who fired a shot from 18 yards out into the back of the net. It was his second goal this season.
After a penalty in the box in the 28th minute, senior Kevin McCarthy was awarded a penalty kick and sent a shot past the Clarkson goalie to put the Statesmen up 3-0.
The Golden Knights had a few opportunities to get on the scoreboard in the second half. A shot by junior Tobin Boomer with 12:51 remaining sailed just right of the goal. With 11:16 left on the clock, junior Elliott Carter sent a pass ahead to first-year Cody Sargood who fired a shot towards the goal, but it went just wide.
Hobart held a 16-13 edge in shots and a 4-0 lead in corner kicks. Junior goalie Charlie Hale stopped two shots and earned his third shutout of the season. Sophomore goalie Saverino Spagnolo recorded five saves in goal for Clarkson.
The Statesmen will wrap up the regular season with a Liberty League contest at Hamilton on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
