Evan Hourigan '04 has a publication in the September 2004 issue of the Journal of Young Investigators, an online, peer-reviewed journal that published student research papers in the natural sciences. The paper, “The Genetic Algorithm, the Evolution of Cooperation, and 'Niceness' in
the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma,” is based on work that Hourigan did for an Honors project in computer science during his senior year at Hobart. Hourigan's adviser for the project was Professor David Eck.
The Genetic Algorithm is a technique for simulating the process of evolution on a computer. The project investigated the idea that cooperation between individuals in a population can emerge spontaneously in such a simulated evolving system, without being programmed in from the start.
