William Smith squash opens season

The William Smith squash team will start the 2010-11 season this weekend with three matches at St. Lawrence. The Herons will take on Queens, Toronto and the host Saints in Canton, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 13. Chip Fishback will begin his 13th season as head coach. He welcomes back nine veterans and brings in four newcomers to the team.

William Smith finished up the 2009-10 season with a 9-10 overall record. This year the Herons will need to fill the holes left by Sarah Hallberg ’10, Medora Hartz ’10, Emily Hazenberg ’10, and Katie Mullen ’10, who served as the core of the starting lineup last winter.

The Herons will look to senior Alexa Comstock and junior Katie Riordan to step into starting roles this season. Comstock started six matches, posting a 4-2 overall mark last season. She split time at No. 5 (1-0) and No. 6 (3-2). Riordan started five matches last season, and played at both the No. 8 and No. 9 spots.

Sophomores Courtney Leous, Anne Habecker, Lucia Rowe, and Olivia Beckwith will also work to make an impact in the starting lineup. Leous recorded a team-high 11 victories and started all 19 matches last season. She split time at No. 7 (2-1), No. 8 (1-1), and went 5-1 at No. 9. Habecker posted a 9-5 overall record last winter including going 8-1 at the No. 8 spot. She ended the 2009-10 season with two straight wins, going 7-3 in her last 10 matches.

Rowe registered a 7-2 overall mark, and went 7-1 at No. 9, while Beckwith went 8-9, posting a 7-3 record at No. 7.

Senior Else Ross will challenge for a starting role. She played in one match last year. Also returning to the Heron squad are junior Sarah Cutts and senior Audrey Stout.

First-year Victoria Scott has looked strong in the preseason and will hold down the No. 1 spot. First-years Madeline Friedman, Ginny McDermott, and Tyler Mitchell will be in the mix as well, bringing depth to the Heron lineup.

After competing at St. Lawrence this weekend, William Smith will travel to take on Rochester on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Herons will then play in the Wesleyan Round Robin Dec. 4 and 5 and the Smith Round Robin January 22 and 23.
