WS soccer earns academic accolades

Nine William Smith College student-athletes were recently named to the Liberty League Women’s Soccer All-Academic Team. The Heron soccer team was also honored with the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) College Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 academic year.

William Smith is one of 439 women’s teams to earn the award. To be eligible to receive this award, a team must have a combined grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The 33 Herons on last fall’s roster recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.36.

The following Herons were named to the 2010 Liberty League All-Academic squad:

Junior Leslie Carrese, sociology
Sophomore Emily D’Addario, environmental studies
Sophomore Alyse DiCenzo, biochemistry
Sophomore Kelsey Hill, undeclared
Senior Emmy Potter, women’s studies
Junior Jamie Sawyer, architectural studies
Junior Leah Shatkin, psychology
Junior Jessie Tarantino, economics
Junior Sarah Tarantino, economics

To earn a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and be at least a sophomore academically.

William Smith finished the season with an 18-3-3 record, and made it to the NCAA Division III Tournament semifinals. This year’s Herons are the sixth William Smith team to record 18 wins in a season, the program’s high water mark.
