As of Friday, Dec. 3 there is new royalty on campus. Lawrence Gregorek ’11 was crowned Mr. Hobart for the upcoming year at the annual Mr. Hobart Pageant.
The event is a popular campus fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. “The HWS Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity did a fantastic job of organizing and presenting the 2010 Mr. Hobart contest,” says Roger Chapin, local Habitat for Humanity official. “The fundraiser was fun, well-attended and raised about $3,000, benefitting our building efforts in the county, specifically Geneva.”
The show was a huge success among students as well. “The show was great! Every act was different and each guy brought their own talent – which was hilarious,” remarks Tess O’Leary ’14. Gregorek’s talent was a self-edited video depicting his many talents, such as painting, sports, and various impressions. Other contestants danced, sang, and played a variety of instruments.
Contestants were selected earlier in the semester based on an application as well as their charisma during recruitment week. “What really makes or breaks a contestant on their application is how interesting their talent is,” explains Grace Hunt, HWS Habitat for Humanity President.
Hunt, along with Amelia Martinez ’12, brought Mr. Hobart back to HWS last year, though the Colleges had hosted a similar event in the past. Hunt believes the reason the event is so successful is due to the involvement of dedicated students.
“We have fantastic club members who were taking care of everything from selling concessions, directing contestants backstage, tallying Mr. Congeniality ballots and setting up decorations,” says Hunt. “We had fantastic MC’s, funny, enthusiastic contestants – and, of course, a great audience.”
