Junior forward Matt Pebole recorded his first double-double of the season to lead the Hobart basketball team to a 69-54 victory over Brockport in the third place game of the Wendy’s College Classic at Roberts Wesleyan. He finished the contest with 13 points and a career-high matching 13 rebounds.
Senior guard Tim Lllewellyn paced the Statesmen with a game-high 22 points, including five three-pointers, and a game-high four steals. Sophomore guard Stefan Thompson, who was named first-team All-Classic, added 14 points and a game-high three assists.
Kyheem Green led the Golden Eagles with 16 points, while Zach McTigue added 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Brockport (1-5) led by as many as 11 in the first half and carried a 30-23 lead into halftime. Green led all scorers with 13 points at the break.
Hobart (5-2) trailed by eight three minutes into the second half. Llewellyn got the Statesmen back in the game with back-to-back threes part of a 12-0 run that Thompson capped with a three of his own for a 38-34 lead.
The game was tied for the fifth and final time at 44-all with 8:13 remaining. Nine unanswered points put Hobart in front for good. Green made a pair of free throws with 6:11 to go to make it a seven-point game, but the Golden Eagles would get no closer. Hobart ended the game on a 16-6 run. Pebole and Thompson both scored four points down the stretch.
Hobart didn’t shoot particularly well (39.7%), but won the battle of the boards 34-31and forced Brockport into 25 turnovers which led to a 20-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
In addition to the third place trophy, Hobart earned the Wendy’s College Classic Sportsmanship Award.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11, when they visit Rochester. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
