This past week, veteran diplomat Richard C. Holbrooke P’87 passed away at the age of 69. In a relationship that began more than 30 years ago when his son enrolled at the Colleges, Holbrooke was a long-time friend and valued member of the HWS community. His son, David, is a member of the Hobart class of 1987.
Holbrooke, the Obama administration’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2009, served as keynote speaker during Commencement ceremony in 2000. With his son in attendance, Holbrooke spoke of the pride he took in being a Hobart dad, and encouraged students to continue to nurture the sense of community engagement and service they had formed at the Colleges. During that ceremony, Holbrooke was also the recipient of an honorary degree, a Doctor of Humane Letters, from the Colleges.
