New Health Professions Coordinator Joins HWS Staff

Under the auspices of the Career Services Office, Laura Van Niel will assist med-student hopefuls

Hobart and William Smith announce the appointment of Laura Van Niel as Health Professions Coordinator at the Colleges. She began in this capacity on Sept. 1.

Van Niel brings a blend of teaching and medical experience to the position. In addition to teaching and health education management positions in Hawaii, Utah and New York, she interned in the Cardiovascular Health Unit of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Most recently, she worked as a physical education and integrated health instructor at Finger Lakes Community College.

Of note is Van Niel’s eight-year affiliation with the New Vision Medical Careers program. She was a career instructor with the Finger Lakes Technical and Career Center in Stanley, N.Y., developing an interdisciplinary program designed to help high school seniors pursue a post-secondary degree in medicine.

In 1986, Van Niel received a B.S. in health, physical education, recreation and dance from Ithaca College, followed by a master’s in physical education and recreation from Utah State University in 1990.

Van Niel lives in Seneca Falls with her husband, John, and daughter, Danika. At the Colleges, she takes over the position vacated by Caryl Dooley, who has retired.
