Sophomore Frank Salituro scored 2 minutes, 24 seconds into overtime to lead the Hobart hockey team to a 2-1 victory in a non-conference game against Buffalo State tonight. With the win, the Statesmen improve to 9-4-1, and the Bengals are now 6-7-2.
After a scoreless first period, Hobart struck first at 10:01 in the second. Senior Matthew Wallace found the back of the net for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Junior Gregory Ciciola and sophomore Mike White earned the assists.
Buffalo State responded, tying the game at one with just 42 seconds left in the second stanza. Nick Petriello tallied his fifth goal this year. Mike Zanella and Drew Klin were credited with assists.
The Statesmen out-shot the Bengals 9-7 in the third period, but neither team could net the game-winner, sending the game into overtime. Senior Kyle Whitaker sent a pass ahead to Salituro whoput a shot past the Buffalo State goaltender to give Hobart the victory. It was his second goal this season.
Sophomore Nick Broadwater played all 62:24 in goal for the Statesmen and finished with 24 saves. Kevin Carr recorded 22 saves in goal for the Bengals. Buffalo State held a slight 25-24 lead in shots. Hobart was 0-for-4 on the power play, and the Bengals were 0-for-5.
The Statesmen return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Curry for another non-conference game at 4:35 p.m.
