The March 1 Chronicle of Higher Education article “Recession and Reality Set In at Private Colleges” quotes a report written by Loren Loomis Hubbell, vice president for finance, and Lucie Lapovsky, president of Mercy College. According to the report, in the last 12 years, the smallest colleges with the lowest tuitions have increased their average discount rates, the percentage of the tuition covered by financial aid, to 43 percent from 28.5 percent. Those colleges are defined as having tuitions of less than $19,880 and freshman classes of fewer than 850. Nearly 90 percent of their students are on financial aid.
