Liberty League honors Statesmen

After leading the Hobart basketball team to its first 3-0 start in conference play since 2002-03, senior guard Tim Llewellyn and first-year forward Richie Bonney garnered weekly awards from the Liberty League today. Llewellyn earned a spot on the Team of the Week, while Bonney was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.

Llewellyn averaged 12.0 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.3 steals last week. On Monday, he scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, all from beyond the arc, in a 65-62 win over Hamilton. On Friday, Llewellyn recorded 11 points, three assists, and three steals in a 76-71 win over Skidmore. He closed out the week with 10 points, seven assists, and three steals in an 88-68 win over Union. For the week, Llewellyn shot 44 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from 3-point range, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

A starter in 13 of 14 games this season, Llewellyn is averaging 9.8 points, 2.7 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.8 rebounds. He’s shooting 41.7 percent from the floor, 40 percent from 3-point range, and 97.5 percent from the free throw line. Llewellyn ranks second in the conference in steals, seventh in 3-pointers made (2.14/g), eighth in 3-point shooting and assists, 15th in field goal percentage, and 22nd in scoring.

Bonney led the Statesmen to a 3-0 start in conference play, averaging 9.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. Against the Continentals, he scored six points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Bonney recorded a team-high 14 points, a game-high eight rebounds, and three steals against the Thoroughbreds. He closed out the week with seven points and a team-high nine rebounds at the expense of the Dutchmen. For the week, Bonney shot 58.8 percent from the floor.

Bonney has come off the bench for the Statesmen in all 14 games, averaging 8.6 points, a team-high 7.5 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.9 steals, and 0.4 blocked shots. He also leads the team in shooting percentage, knocking down 54.1 percent of his shots from the floor. Bonney is ranked second in the Liberty League in rebounding and field goal percentage, 15th in blocked shots, and 28th in scoring.

This is the fifth time this season Bonney has been named the Rookie of the Week.

Hobart (11-3, 3-0) is off to its best start since the 1978-79 Statesmen also won 11 of their first 14 games. Hobart will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 21, when the Statesmen visit Vassar (3-10, 1-1).
