Three different Statesmen scored as No. 14 Hobart edged Morrisville for a 3-2 win in a non-conference game tonight at The Cooler. It is the fourth straight win for the Statesmen, who improve to 12-4-1.
The Statesmen came out strong scoring twice in the opening period. Senior Tommy Capalbo scored Hobart’s first goal on the Statesmen’s first shot of the game. Capalbo scored his sixth goal of the year on a shot from right in front of the goal. First-year Tommy Fiorentino and senior Christopher Bower earned the assists. At 10:03 in the first, first-year Tom Rush scored his first goal as a Statesmen when he tipped in a shot by sophomore Brad Richard from the blue line to make it 2-0. Sophomore Frank Salituro also earned an assist.
The Mustangs (8-7-1) scored their first goal of the night just 1:54 into the second period. Ryan Marcus registered his first goal of the year off a pass from James Jarvis. With 4:24 left in the middle period, Salituro found the back of the net to make it 3-1. It was his fourth goal of the year. Senior Kyle Whitaker and Rush were credited with assists.
With just 49 seconds left in regulation, Jarvis was able to capitalize on a power play to get Morrisville within one. Taylor Vince and Rob Sgarbossa earned the assists. The Mustangs pulled their goalie with 25 seconds remaining, but could not get the tying goal.
Sophomore goalie Nick Broadwater finished with 43 saves in goal. Caylin Relkoff turned aside 25 shots in goal for the Mustangs. Morrisville held a 45-28 advantage in shots. The Mustangs were 1-for-9 on the power play, and the Statesmen were 0-for-3.
Hobart will return to action on Friday, Jan. 28, when the Statesmen travel to Utica for an ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
