First-years Tom Rush and Keith Clarke each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the 15th-ranked Hobart hockey team to a 4-0 win over Neumann in an ECAC West game played tonight at The Cooler.
With the win, the Statesmen improve to 13-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the ECAC West. Neumann is now 10-7-4 overall and 4-4-0 in league play. The two teams will play again tomorrow, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. in The Cooler.
Sophomore goalie Nick Broadwater finished with 40 saves, and earned his second shutout of the season.
Rush scored the game’s first goal 6 minutes, 26 seconds into the first period. Sophomore Frank Salituro set up the play, and Clarke sent a short pass across the front of the goal find Rush. It was Rush’s second goal this season. Senior Tommy Capalbo took advantage of a 5-on-4 situation to make it 2-0. He caught Neumann Matt Tendler on the left post, and was able to place a shot just inside the right post at 9:54 in the opening period. It was his eighth goal of the year. Sophomores Mike White and Ryan Corcoran earned the assists.
The Statesmen scored two more unanswered goals in the second period. Clarke registered his first collegiate goal off assists from Rush and Salituro 7:10 into the period. Then 1:29 later, sophomore Harry Radovich fired a shot on goal that was saved, but senior Matthew Wallace was there to collect the rebound and score his team-leading 15th goal this season. Sophomore Brad Richard also earned an assist on play.
Tendler played the opening 28:39 seconds in goal for the Knights, and made 19 saves. Ross MacKinnon came in to play the final 31:21. He recorded 18 saves.
Hobart held a slight 41-40 advantage in shots. The Statesmen were 1-for-6 on the power play, and killed all five of Neumann’s power-play opportunities.
