When the 83rd Academy Awards® were presented on Feb. 27, Hobart alum Ken Halsband ’88 was in the audience with the cast and crew of “The Fighter,” nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Halsband is executive vice president and head of Physical and Post Production at Relativity Media, LLC, and co-producer of the film with Jeff Waxman. Within a very competitive field, “The Fighter” took home two Oscars for best supporting actor and actress for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.
“The Fighter” is about the early career of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward and his brother who helped train him before going pro in the mid-1980s. It has been called the “Best Sports Movie of the Decade” by Sports Illustrated.
Halsband, who has agreed to meet with HWS students as part of the L.A. experience trip taking place March 14 and 15, got his start working in production on various studio films in New York City. In 2001, he relocated to Los Angeles with the intention of applying his film production experience to the business side of the film industry. For three years, he ran a production company that produced a slate of DVD titles for the studios. He joined Relativity Media in 2006.
His work as a producer, executive producer, head of production and head of physical and post production includes more than 60 films, including “Dear John,” “The Spy Next Door,” “Brothers” and “Son of the Mask.”
He earned a B.A. in English from Hobart College.
