The William Smith basketball team made eight 3-pointers and more free throws than Clarkson attempted as the Herons scored a 67-59 Liberty League victory tonight. Senior guard Mollie Danahy led three William Smith players in double figures with 15 points.
The Herons (12-10, 7-4) finished the night 8-of-24 from beyond the arc and 13-of-20 from the free throw line. The Golden Knights (5-16, 2-9) were just 4-of-16 from long range and made 9-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Danahy was joined in double digits by junior forward Kristen Kush and first-year guard Erin O’Brien, who contributed 13 points apiece. O’Brien and classmate Sasha Borenstein (9 pts) both accounted for three triples. Danahy, Kush, and first-year guard Jacqueline Murphy shared team-high honors with eight rebounds each. Murphy also had a game-high four steals.
Clarkson’s Chrissy Scanlon posted a double-double on a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Stacey Garcia chipped in 13 points. Lauren Pluchino pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Both teams struggled to find thier shooting touch in the first half, as only Scanlon and Kush seemed to have any success. Scanlon shot 4-for-6, while the rest of the Knights were just 4-for-24, while Kush went 5-for-6, and the remainder of the Herons were 5-for-26. Clarkson jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but the Herons responded with a 12-2 run and never let go of the lead for the remainder of the contest.
In the second half, both teams figured it out offensively, making shots at a near 50 percent clip. However, it was William Smith’s perimeter shooting that won the game, as the Herons went 6-for-12 from beyond the 3-point arc to close out the game.
William Smith will be back in actoin on Saturday, Feb. 12, when the Herons visit St. Lawrence (17-4, 8-3). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
