This Saturday, Feb. 19, marks Heritage Day at HWS. From noon to 4 p.m., participating student groups will gather in the Vandervort Room to showcase the activities, countries, and cultures that have shaped their lives. All interested students are invited to take part. This event is sponsored by the William Smith Deans and the Laurel Society of William Smith, who wish to celebrate the fact that “Everyone has a heritage!”
This year’s celebration marks a revival of a previous tradition, which has included exhibits from study abroad groups, performances by cultural clubs, and samplings of international foods. Organizers expect a similar variety of cultural expression this year.
A number of student groups such as the Asian Student Union, the Caribbean Student Association, Sankofa, PRIDE Alliance, Hillel, Project Nur, and the Latin American Organization have signed up to attend, and there is still room for more. In addition, students returned from semesters abroad in cities such as diverse as Vietnam, Russia and Wales will be hosting tables. A raffle will be held during the event to benefit the Alternative Spring Break trip to Nicaragua.
Admission is free; all members of the HWS, Geneva, and surrounding communities are invited to attend.
