Polinak Quoted on Rising College Costs

Peter Polinak, vice president for finance and treasurer, was quoted in the Sept. 21 Daily Messenger (Canandaigua, N.Y.) article “With higher education come higher costs.” Area colleges are raising their tuition to accommodate for operational expenses, insurance and personnel costs.

Polinak said utility bills and faculty salaries have contributed to recent tuition increases.

“Utilities have really hit colleges hard,” he said, noting that Hobart and William Smith has seen at least a 10 percent increase in the cost of natural gas for the past several years.

As for salaries, “We have to compete with other schools in our peer group,” he said.
