Tenzin Featured in FLT

Venerable Tenzin Yignyen, an instructor of Asian languages and cultures at Hobart and William Smith Colleges since 1998 and a high-ranking monk within the Dalai Lama’s personal monastery, was featured in the Sept. 23 Finger Lakes Times. The story “Monk to create mandala at FLCC” announces a sand mandala that Tenzin will create at Finger Lakes Community College, beginning on Oct. 6. Once the sand art is completed, it will then be dismantled and poured into a stream on campus during the closing ceremony at 4 p.m. Oct. 12.

Yignyen, who will perform the ceremonies, has taught and constructed mandalas throughout the United States, including the Natural Museum of History in Los Angeles; Windstar Foundation in Aspen, Colo.; the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio; the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester and Cornell University.

At HWS, Tenzin creates sand mandalas each semester with students. In addition to creating the mandala, he is an instructor in meditation, Tibetan Buddhism and art, as well as Asian studies.
