Senior Patrick Moriarty scored Hobart’s lone goal and sophomore goalie Nick Broadwater earned his third shutout of the season to lead Hobart to a 1-0 win over No. 12 Manhattanville in an ECAC West Tournament first round game played at The Cooler tonight.
The Statesmen, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, improve to 15-9-2 overall and will play top-seeded Elmira in the tournament semifinal in Elmira, N.Y., on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The Valiants, the No. 5 seed, wrapped up their season with a 15-10-1 mark.
Broadwater turned aside all 36 shots that he faced to earn his third shutout. He tied the Hobart record for shutouts in a season. He matched the mark set by Keith Longo ’09 in 2005 and 2008.
The Statesmen got on the scoreboard 14 minutes, 33 seconds into the opening period. Senior Matthew Wallace fired a shot on goal that bounced off the pads of Manhattanville goalie Pierre-Olivier Lemieux. Moriarty was there to collect the rebound and send a shot into the back of the net to give Hobart a 1-0 lead. It was his fifth goal this season. Sophomore Brad Richard set up the play. It turned out to be all the Statesmen would need, as they held off the Valiants for the next two periods.
Manhattanville had a few scoring chances late in the game. The Statesmen were called for a five minute major penalty at the end of the second period, but were able to kill off the Valiants’ man-up opportunity. Hobart also killed a two-minute penalty later in the final period. Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Valiants pulled Lemieux, who finished with 21 saves, with 1:03 left in the game for an extra-skater, but were still unable to tie up the game. Manhattanville held a 36-22 advantage in shots.
