Top-Seeded Statesmen Host Tournament

After posting a 19-6 overall record and tying for the Liberty League regular season title with an 11-3 mark, the Hobart basketball team earned home court advantage for the 2011 Liberty League Tournament. The tournament will take place in Bristol Gym this weekend, Feb. 25-26.

The Statesmen need one more victory to tie the school record for wins in a season, and their 11-3 conference mark matched the program’s best Liberty League record, set in 2000-01.

Hobart is led by first-team All-Liberty League selections Matt Pebole ’12 and Stefan Thompson ’13, and Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year Tim Llewellyn ’11. The Statesmen also boast the league’s Rookie of the Year in Richie Bonnie ’14. Bonnie and classmate Blair Helton each earned a spot on the Liberty League’s All-Rookie Team as well. Pebole ranks second in the conference in scoring (16.1 ppg), while Thompson leads the league in assists (4.4 apg) and is fifth in scoring (14.3 ppg). The program leader for career steals (267), Llewellyn leads the league in that category (2.16 spg) and ranks fifth in assists (2.86 apg).

Top-seeded Hobart will face fourth-seeded Hamilton (15-9, 9-5) in the Liberty League semifinal round on Friday at 8 p.m. Third-seeded Skidmore (16-9, 10-4) and second-seeded Rensselaer (17-7, 11-3) will square off in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Admission to all three games is free.
