Helton honored by league; Statesmen to host ECAC Tournament

Hobart first-year guard Blair Helton was named Liberty League Men’s Basketball Co-Rookie of the Week by the conference office today. The Statesmen also learned they will be the top seed and host of the 2011 ECAC Upstate Tournament.

Helton scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed three rebounds in a 62-60 loss to Hamilton in the Liberty League Tournament Semifinals. He was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line and 3-of-8 from the floor in a season-high 25 minutes.

Helton has played in 24 games this season, averaging 6.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.5 steals in 13.2 minutes. He’s shooting 37.3 percent from the floor, 26.8 percent from three point range and 68.5 percent from the free throw line.

The Statesmen (19-7) will return to action at 5 p.m. on March 5 as they host fourth seeded Sage (13-12) in the first semifinal of the ECAC Upstate Tournament in Bristol Gym. Second-seeded Medaille (20-7) will face No. 3 Brockport (15-13) in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.

Hobart is making its second straight appearance in the ECAC Upstate Tournament and sixth since 1978-79. The Statesmen are one win shy of the school single season record.

Admission to all three games is free. Fans who cannot make it to Geneva can follow the action online with Live Stats and All-Access Video.
