Once again the HWS community will join with tens of millions of people worldwide to show support for reducing energy consumption by participating in Earth Hour. This year, Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 26, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to turn off their lights and pledge their support to reducing our energy consumption by committing to an hour without electric lights for the sake of energy conservation.
During this time, Campus Greens will host a Desserts in the Dark event in the Scandling Campus Center. Students are encouraged to turn their residence hall lights off at 8:30 p.m.and head to the Scandling Campus Center to enjoy desserts and music.
Since 2007, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses in Sydney, Australia, took a stand against climate change and lived in the dark for an hour, Earth Hour has become a global initiative for sustainability. More than 35 countries are participating.
Earth Hour is another initiative that can help the Colleges reach the campus goal of 10 percent increase in recycling and 10 percent decrease in energy consumption.
Additionally, on Friday, March 25, HWS Eco-Reps will turn off unnecessary lights in classrooms across campus to prepare for and raise awareness about Earth Hour.
