Herons fly past Golden Knights

Junior Rosie Scheibel and sophomore Marissa Potter scored five and four goals respectively, to lead the William Smith lacrosse team to a 21-13 win over Clarkson in a Liberty League game on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. The Herons improve to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Golden Knights are now 1-5 and 0-2 in the Liberty League.

Potter added two assists, eight ground balls, seven draw controls, and two caused turnovers for William Smith. Senior Cassie Findlay scored three goals and tallied three helpers. Junior Lucy Johnson chipped in two goals and one assist.

Sophomore Kathleen Ragan scored twice and earned an assist, and junior Katherine Vesce recorded three goals and two assists. Sophomore Emily Leahy had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Jesse Wilson stopped seven shots in 55:03, and first-year Maggie McNair came in to play the final 4:57 and made two saves.

Hannah Walters had an impressive 21 saves in goal for Clarkson. Alyssa Cristaldi registered three goals and four assists. Kerrie Cline tallied four goals, and Katie VanDeValk scored three goals and won six draw controls. Marissa Mastron had two goals and two assists, and Alyssa Dausman added a goal and two helpers.

The Herons enjoyed a 47-27 advantage in shots and held a 25-23 edge in ground balls. William Smith won 22 draw controls, and the Golden Knights came up with 14. The Herons were successful on 14 of 16 clears, while Clarkson was successful on just 14 of 27 attempts.

Potter started off the scoring just nine seconds into the game. VanDeValk answered to tie the game at one. A goal by Scheibel at 2:04 put the Herons up 2-1, and William Smith held the lead for the rest of the contest. Potter set up Vesce to make it 3-1. At 6:41Matronardi collected a pass from Cristaldi and found the back of the net to get the Golden Knights within one, but that is as close as they would get.

At 9:23 in the first, Potter kicked off a 6-0 run for the Herons. Findlay set up Vesce for her second goal of the day, and then Ragan and Johnson capitalized on free positions. Goals by Findlay and Potter made it 9-2 at 16:08. Clarkson’s Cristaldi set up back-to-back goals, the first to Dausman and the second 1:12 later to Cline to make it 9-4. With 5:28 left in the opening half, Findlay sparked a 5-0 run for the Herons. It featured two goals by Scheibel, as well as two goals and an assist by Vesce. Leahy registered a goal and an assist in the spurt. With 1:14 left on the clock Cline fired a shot into the back of the net to make it 14-5 at the half.

Cristaldi scored her first goal of the day 30 seconds into the second half to cut the Heron lead to eight. At 4:18 in the second, an unassisted goal by Potter started off another 5-0 run for William Smith this time to give the Herons their largest lead of the contest at 19-6. Scheibel tallied twice in the run.

With 12:18 on the clock, Mastronardi found the back of the net, and then the Golden Knights scored the next three goals to get within nine. Saryn Campbell set up two goals in the run, and Cristaldi logged a goal and an assist. Johnson took advantage of a free position to make it 20-10, but goals by VanDeValk and Cline cut the Heron lead back to eight. With 28 seconds left, Leahy notched her second goal of the day, and Cristaldi scored her third of the afternoon with two seconds remaining for the final.

The Herons will be back in action on April 7, when they travel to play No. 5 Cortland at 4 p.m.
