To help increase awareness of the millions of people around the world who do not have shoes, the Hobart and William Smith Colleges community will host an event called, “One Day Without Shoes.” The event will take place on Wednesday, April 6, beginning at 8:30 a.m. outside the Scandling Campus Center. Later, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. a closing forum and speak-out session will be held outside the Scandling Campus Center. The group will also raise money and collect shoes that will be sent to Haiti and Japan.
This is a nationwide event sponsored by TOMS Shoes, a for-profit footwear company which also operates a non-profit subsidiary, Friends of TOMS. The company designs and sells lightweight shoes based on the Argentine alpargata design. With every pair sold, TOMS donates a new pair of shoes to a child in need.
“One Day Without Shoes” is being organized by Shanelle France ’11 and Noah Lucas ’13. “During RA training this past summer, Noah noticed that I always walked around barefoot. He looked into walking barefoot for a cause, and we discovered this worthy event,” France says.
“It is so easy to get carried away and forget about other people who do not have the same things as we do; therefore, walking barefoot for a day offers the smallest glimpse into the life of someone else. We are always told to take a walk in someone else’s shoes…but what if they don’t have any shoes?”
Participation is easy! Just leave your shoes behind you on Wednesday!
