McGinn ’73 to Discuss Civilian Careers

HWS Trustee Gail H. McGinn ’73, former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Plans with the U.S. Department of Defense and president of McGinn Consulting, LLC., will return to campus on Thursday, April 14 as part of the Professionals in Residence Series.

During her talk “Civilian Careers in the U.S. Defense Department,” McGinn will speak with students about her commitment to the Armed Forces during her 37-year career as one of the highest ranking civilian women in the Department of Defense. She will also reflect on her experience as a William Smith student and graduate.

The talk will be held at 7 p.m. in Trinity 305.

McGinn’s successful career in the Pentagon has aided military families in incalculable ways. She worked tirelessly to create programs focused on military family support, child development, domestic violence prevention, as well as casualty and mortuary affairs policies. Her work also included strategic planning, program evaluation and initiatives that aided military service members  in developing and building foreign language skills. McGinn’s prestigious career also afforded her time abroad, working overseas in Frankfurt, Germany for three years.

McGinn received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from William Smith in 1973. She graduated from magna cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.  While at HWS, she was a member of the William Smith judicial board, the Echo & Pine yearbook and the Dean’s List. McGinn went on to earn an Ed.M. from Boston University in 1980.

The event is sponsored by the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development.
