The Hobart rowing team’s second varsity eight won a gold medal, while the varsity four won a silver medal at the Knecht Cup today.
Going against the first varsity eights from Grand Valley State, Philadelphia, and Carnegie Mellon, Wes Davis, Reid Johnson, David Grossman, Dillon Nachbar, Evan White, Michael Hess, Nathaniel Shils, Michael Cichelli, and Michael Copacino captured the gold medal with a time of 6:32.48 to win the Division II/III men’s varsity eight event. The Statesmen were more than four seconds ahead of the second place Lakers (6:36.70).
It was a double medal day for Grossman, Nachbar, Hess, and Johnson, who teamed up with coxswain Sarah Tanzer to finish second in the Division II/III men’s varsity four event. Mercyhurst covered the 2,000-meter course in a winning time of 7:02.19, while Hobart posted a time of 7:05.24. Rutgers-Camden was third in 7:06.98.
The Statesmen novice eight finished sixth in the men’s novice eight grand final with a time of 6:28.72. Drexel won the event in 6:10.86, followed by Boston College, Bucknell, Trinity, and Grand Valley State.
Hobart’s varsity eight, one of only three Division III crews entered in the men’s varsity eight event, won the petite final in 6:07.45. The Statesmen outdueled Bucknell, crossing the finish line 0.83 seconds ahead of the Bison.
The Statesmen will be back on the water on April 16, when they take on Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y., in the annual Seneca Cup competition.
