WS defeats Rochester

Six different Herons scored two or more goals as the William Smith lacrosse team breezed to a 17-2 win over visiting Rochester in a Liberty League game played this afternoon on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation.

The Herons improve to 3-0 in league play and are now 5-4 overall. The Yellowjackets drop their third straight game and are now 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League.

Three Herons registered a game-high four points in the victory. Junior Lucy Johnson scored three goals and added an assist. Sophomore Marissa Potter and junior Katherine Vesce each added two goals and two assists. Junior Rosie Scheibel scored three times, and junior Kathryn Gillan  chipped in two goals and a helper.

Junior Megan Brophy recorded a game-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore Jesse Wilson played the opening 54:37 and stopped four shots. First-year Maggie McNair came into play the final 5:23.

Sarah Skinner and Lindsey Randall each scored for Rochester, and Niki Holmes earned an assist. Frances Cooley played all 60 minutes and turned aside eight shots.

Johnson started off the scoring just 39 seconds into the game. Scheibel logged her first goal at 6:16. Skinner put Rochester on the board capitalizing on a free position attempt 35 seconds later. At 8:15 the Herons started off a six goal run to take an 8-1 lead. Potter fed Scheibel for her second tally of the day. Gillan logged an unassisted goal, and then the duo of Potter and Scheibel struck again. At 14:34 Potter scored a goal of her own, and Johnson and first-year Hannah Schickel followed with unassisted tallies. Just 12 seconds before the break, Randall put a shot past Wilson to make it 8-2 at halftime.

William Smith dominated the second half scoring all nine goals. Johnson and Gillan started off the scoring with free position goals. An unassisted tally by Vesce made it 11-2. At 10:02, Potter fired a free position shot into the back of the net, and 1:20 later Johnson set up sophomore Katie Dexter who gave the Herons an 11 goal advantage. With 10:40 on the clock, Gillan found sophomore Kathleen Ragan who made it 14-2. William Smith added three more goals in the final 5:50. Vesce took a pass from senior Cassie Findlay and fired into the back of the net, and then sophomore Emily Leahy scored back-to-back goals for the final.

The Herons out-shot the Yellowjackets, 31-8. The Herons picked up 20 ground balls, while Rochester recorded seven. William Smith also enjoyed a 12-8 edge in draw controls.

William Smith will travel to play another Liberty League contest on April 15 against Union at 4 p.m.
