The Student Life and Leadership Office proudly announces the Student Leader of the Month for September: Mariza Pereira.
Pereira embodies the leadership skills and spirit that Hobart and William Smith students strive to achieve. Pereira worked over the summer at HWS with Kay Kelly, the international student adviser, to prepare for the orientation of new international students. Her contribution to this effort made a difference to their experience. Throughout the summer, Pereira prepared artwork for presentation folders given to each student which included images of diversity that convey to our international students how HWS is made stronger by the celebration of differences that they bring to our community.
She welcomed students as they arrived, both day and night; made sure they were comfortable, and worked tirelessly for a week straight answering questions, touring campus, helping students relax and feel safe. She became the person that these students could rely on. Following the orientation program, she has been unfailingly available to these students in a cheerful and helpful manner.
Pereira has only been a member of the Hobart and William Smith community since the spring semester of 2004. She has used her experiences to help others integrate more easily and smoothly. As a result of her work, the Colleges have a happy and closely bonded group of diverse international students.
Overall, Pereira can be admired for her quiet form of leadership at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She is a leader in every sense of the word and our campus would not be the same without her.
If you would like to nominate a student for the Student Leader of the Month award for the month of October, please submit your nominations to email@example.com by Oct. 22.
