Iva Deutchman, professor of political science, was quoted in the October/November 2004 issue of East West Woman magazine, in the article “Choose or Lose … or Maybe Not.”
Neither the Democratic nor Republican parties are actively courting Asian American voters, according to the article.
“In a close election like this, both parties are trying to reach out to their base and win over whatever undecided voters they can,” said Deutchman. “They can't afford to not appeal to Hispanics because they are going to be the largest minority in the country and it's a vote that could go either way. But they can afford not to separate out APIAs (Asian Pacific Islander Americans). There are a lot of groups that both parties take for granted and rightly so, and the APIAs are one such group for the Democrats.”
