Heron rowing gets NCAA bid

The Herons are one of six teams in the nation selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Rowing Championship at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif., on Friday and Saturday, May 27-28. William Smith is making its ninth championship appearance.

The other five teams competing for the national championship are Bates, Ithaca, Trinity, Wellesley, and Williams. The six competing teams will each field a varsity eight and a second varsity eight. Marietta and Puget Sound earned at-large bids for their varsity eights to complete the 14-crew field.

The Herons’ varsity eight has been ranked in the top-10 of the CRCA/USRowing national coaches poll all year. They began the spring at No. 8, but vaulted up to No. 4 after defeating No. 2 Ithaca to open the season. A week later, William Smith’s top crew bested then No. 8 WPI. On April 23, the Herons won the program’s fourth Liberty League Championship, besting then No. 9 St. Lawrence by four seconds.

William Smith is appearing in the NCAA Rowing Championship for the second consecutive year. In 2010, the Herons earned one of the two at-large eight bids to the championship, which was also in Gold River.
