Senior skipper Kelly Crane guided the William Smith sailing team to victory in the B Division of the Sperry Top-Sider/ICSA Women’s Dinghy National Championship in Cascade Locks, Ore.
Plagued by intermittent winds, just seven of 18 rotations were completed during three days of racing. Crane teamed with senior crews Holly Huffine and Hannah Littell to handle the conditions best in B Division. They finished in the top five in five of seven races, placing second twice. William Smith’s score of 35 was five points better than second place Rhode Island.
In the A Division, the Herons cracked the top 10 twice in the final two races of the regatta. Senior skipper Caroline Patten and first-year skipper Arielle deLisser sailed with first-year crew Jane Rew to a 14th place finish. Georgetown won the Division by a single point over the Rams.
Rhode Island won the overall title by 10 points over Connecticut College.
The Hobart and William Smith coed sailing team will be back on the water on Friday, May 27 for the start of the ICSA APS Team Race National Championship, also in Cascade Locks.
