Genoa Boswell ’09 received the call from CBS TV to “come on down” to Beverly Hills, where she is working in guest relations on the game show “The Price is Right.” Since January, Boswell has worked for CBS as a page, a position that has been a part of CBS for 40 years.
“It’s a great entry-level position that allows new graduates the time and connections to work on a variety of shows at both CBS studios. We work on any show filmed at either lot that uses an audience. Our job is to get the audience where they’re supposed to be, process their releases, get them camera ready, and making sure they have a good time,” says Boswell.
Although the majority of her work is with “The Price is Right,” she also works on CBS shows such as the “Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “The Talk.” Her work also includes projects for other networks such as “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “American Idol,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Got Talent.”
Boswell says her time at Hobart and William Smith Colleges working as programming director for WEOS-FM was the most beneficial in preparing her for a career in television.
“My time at WEOS gave me the experience I needed to work in broadcasting. Working at an NPR affiliated station taught me invaluable lessons, and didn’t look too bad on a resume either,” explains Boswell.
As a media and society major, Professors Elisabeth Lyon and Les Friedman were also influential, teaching her to look at the deeper side of films and television.
“My independent study with Professor Lyon gave me an incredible experience,” she says. “I made a 30-minute film about Geneva and did everything from the screenplay, to the directing and camera work, to the acting, and the editing – it really gave me a chance to get some hands-on experience in what I wanted to do.”
Boswell received her B.A. in media and society and English. During her time at the Colleges, Boswell worked as a programming director at WEOS for all four years, participated in Arts Collective, Koshare and Student Film Archive, and was a member of the College Democrats. Besides working at WEOS, Boswell has interned at Zoomari Films in New York City and both KCUR-TV and KCPT-TV in Kansas City, where she made the connections that helped her get her job with CBS.
