Iva Deutchman, professor of political science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, had a guest essay published in the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y. Entitled Electoral college not complex, Deutchman examines how the Electoral College works in light of many recent arguments to abolish it. “While the argument that we need to 'protect' the government from the influence of the unwashed and undereducated masses probably would fall on deaf ears today, abolishing the Electoral College is not without risks” she explains. “We might want to consider all of its effects, intended and unintended, before we decide that the Electoral College has outlived its usefulness.
