The William Smith soccer team defeated Babson 1-0 in a non-conference game played at Harwell-Rogers Field on Saturday. The game marked the season opener for the Beavers, and the Herons improved to 2-0.
Senior Amanda Davis played all 90 minutes, and only needed to make one save to secure her second shutout this fall. The Herons dominated offensively, enjoying a 15-2 advantage in shots and a 10- 1 lead in corners. Lisa Wojnar finished with three saves in goal for Babson.
The Herons broke through in the 52nd minute, when a handball off a deflected shot in the box resulted in a penalty kick. Wojnar made a valiant effort on junior Whitney Frary‘s ensuing bid, but the Herons’ striker beat the senior keeper with a perfectly struck shot that found the left corner for the game’s first and only goal at 51:59.
Babson would put up its only shot on goal in the contest with 24 seconds remaining in regulation, but Davis recorded her only save of the day to preserve her team’s 1-0 victory.
William Smith will play another non-league game at Wellesley, tomorrow, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m.
