Author Jim Calder ’79 will return to campus on Friday, Sept. 16, to discuss his new book, “Lacrosse – The Ancient Game.” The book looks at the sport of lacrosse from the perspective of the cultural significance of the game within the culture of the Cayuga Nation, explores the impact exposure to Europeans had on the game, and describes the holistic relationship between the stickmaker, players and ritual. Calder is co-author and publisher with Ron Fletcher, author of two historical books on Toronto’s rivers, and Delmor Jacobs, a Cayuga faithkeeper at Six Nations Reservation.
The event takes place from 2 until 4 p.m., in the Trophy Lobby in the Bristol Gymnasium. It will begin with a slideshow and refreshments, followed by a welcome by Mike Hanna ’68, Hobart director of athletics, and Brian Cockett, general book coordinator at The College Store. Calder will then discuss the background of the development of his book; signings will begin at 2:45 p.m.
Additionally, the Hobart Alumni Lacrosse Game is slated for 8 p.m. on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation. If his schedule permits, Calder will be available for discussion and book signing at the Statesmen Tent.
This book launch is sponsored by The College Store and hosted by Hobart Athletics.
