The Colleges Partner with Zipcar

Hobart and William Smith Colleges recently launched a new partnership with Zipcar, Inc., a leading car-sharing network, to offer a Zipcar car-sharing program on campus. The cost-effective and convenient transportation option is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all students, faculty and staff members ages 18 and older. Hobart and William Smith Colleges students, faculty and staff members can join today at www.zipcar.com/hws.

HWS members pay a $25 annual fee, and rates on all Zipcars start as low as $8 per hour and $66 per day.  Gas, insurance, reserved parking spots, up to 180 miles of driving per day and roadside assistance are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as little as an hour or for multiple days.

“In addition to providing a convenient and cost-efficient transportation option, Zipcar is also helping Hobart and William Smith Colleges reduce thier carbon footprint,” said Mark Norman, Zipcar President and COO. “Zipcar is an environmentally friendly transportation alternative, and national studies have proven that each car shared removes at least 15 privately owned vehicles from the road, thereby cutting down on emissions and congestion.”

HWS have two vehicles, which are located in the Medbery parking lot.  Zipcars are self service and can be easily reserved and accessed 24 hours a day. Participating members with smartphones, including iPhones and Android devices, may make reservations by downloading the Zipcar mobile applications, which can also be used to lock and unlock the vehicles, as well as honk the horn to facilitate the location of a vehicle.  Reservations can also be made over the phone or by using the Zipcar website.

“This partnership could not have been made possible without the student government’s determination for a sustainable campus life” said Robert Pool, director of student activities. “We are proud of the Hobart and William Smith student body, and are excited that the Zipcars are now available.”

“Our goal from the beginning of this process was to ensure we could provide students, faculty and staff with a sustainable source of transportation,” said Kaylyn O’Brien ’12. “After seeing the success of the Zipcar program on other colleges and universities, we realized Zipcar’s car-sharing service would be a perfect fit for Hobart and William Smith Colleges.”

Zipcar has established partnerships with more than 230 universities, including University of Rochester, SUNY Geneseo and University at Buffalo. For more information, including how to become a member of Zipcar at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, please visit www.zipcar.com/hws.
