HWS Wins Cornell Fall Open

The Hobart and William Smith sailing team won the Cornell Fall Open in Ithaca, N.Y. this weekend. HWS also competed at the Laser North No. 1 in Kings Point, N.Y.

In Ithaca, senior Patrick Kana and first-year Marnie Merrill finished in third in the A Division. They placed in the top 3 in six out of nine races and claimed two victories. In the B Division, first-year Elliott Morrill and sophomore Morgan Gould sailed to a first place finish. They placed in the top three in all nine races and earned five wins.

At the Laser North No. 1, junior Tim Zacher led HWS posting a fifth place finish. He placed in the top 5 in eight out of 16 races and earned one victory. With his fifth place finish, Zacher qualified for the MAISA Singlehanded Men’s Championship. Sophomore John Darby sailed to an 11th place finish, and senior Alex Butti claimed 13th. Junior Potter Hodgson finished 16th and first-year Peter Holz was right behind him in 17th place.

HWS will be back on the water this weekend, Sept. 17-18, in Kings Point, N.Y., at the Nevins Trophy and in Throggs Neck, N.Y., at the New York Maritime Open.
