The William Smith soccer team earned its sixth straight shutout with a 2-0 win over Buffalo State in a non-conference match played this afternoon. The Herons are now 5-0-1 and the Bengals record now stands at 4-3-0.
After a scoreless first period, the Herons broke through in the 54th minute. Senior Kate Redmond booted a crossing pass in front of the net. Junior Whitney Frary was there to receive it, and fire a shot into the back of the goal. It was Frary’s third tally this season.
In the 67th minute, first-year Krista Longo collected a loose ball in front of the net and sent a shot by the keeper to stretch the William Smith lead to 2-0. It was Longo’s second goal in as many games.
Senior Amanda Davis played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped all three shots that she faced to secure her fifth shutout. Virginia Porten played the opening 7:36 in goal for the Bengals. She made one save. Tina Boberskyj came in for the final 82:24 and made seven saves.
The Herons enjoyed a 14-3 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
William Smith will host Rochester for another non-league game on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m.
