The E.R. Cuony Tribute and Scholarship Fund honored Edward Cuony, HWS professor of education emeritus, in a ceremony Nov. 8.
The scholarship will be awarded beginning in June 2005 to the young woman and young man in the graduating class who best exemplify those human qualities that Cuony has demonstrated himself, namely scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship, team work, commitment, citizenship and patriotism.
Cuony is a legendary coach and athlete and has been honored by Syracuse University, his alma mater, and the Geneva Sports Hall of Fame. For nearly 30 years he had a successful career as a teacher, coach, counselor, and administrator in the Geneva City School district; a career interrupted by World War II, where he served in the United States Coast Guard and commanded combat vessels in the Caribbean, Atlantic, and South Pacific theaters.
After retiring from the Geneva City School system, Cuony joined the faculty at Hobart and William Smith.
From the Finger Lakes Times article on November 4: “For those whose lives he’s touched, 88-year-old Dr. Edward “Butch” Cuony stands almost larger than life, a man known for emphasizing not only academics and athletics, but for encouraging his young protégés to stand up and take charge of their own destinies.”
