Junior Will Abbott scored two goals including the game-winner with 4:30 left to lead the 10th-ranked Hobart soccer team to a 3-2 win over Cortland in a non-conference game played tonight. The Statesmen improve to 7-0-0, and the Red Dragons are now 1-3-3.
Hobart scored first just 1:35 into the game. Abbott sent a shot inside the right post to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. Junior Reuben Burk set up the play. The Red Dragons answered tying the game in the 29th minute. Chris Barbosa served up a pass from the right side to John Recordon, who scored on a shot from right in front of the goal.
In the 50th minute, junior Ian McGarty took back the lead for Hobart. Sophomore Kaeghan Kelly took a corner kick for the Statesmen, and McGarty connected for a goal on a diving header.In the 62nd minute, Lukas Petersen kept the score 2-1 when he denied Cortland junior Max Schmitt’s open shot from the right side that appeared to be headed into the left side of the goal.
However, Cortland would not go away quietly. This time Recordon set up the play in the 68th minute sending a cross from the left side to Simon Park. Park fired a shot just inside the right post to tie up the game for a second time.
With just 4:30 left in regulation, Abbott tallied his second goal of the game. He collected a rebound off a shot by sophomore Eli Vitale and placed the ball past the Cortland keeper to secure the 3-2 win for the Statesmen.
Senior Charlie Hale played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with five saves. Brian McNicholas stopped five shots for the Red Dragons. Hobart out-shot Cortland 19-13. Each team earned five corner kicks.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they travel to take on Clarkson in their Liberty League opener at 2 p.m.
