In May, when President Mark D. Gearan announced that Dean Cerri Banks had been appointed Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of the College at Mount Holyoke, he also announced the appointment of Professor Susanne McNally as Acting Dean of William Smith College. Gearan stated, “She, along with her dedicated and very capable team in the Dean’s Office, will continue the proud tradition of William Smith College.”
During a 39-year career at HWS, Professor of History Susanne McNally has served in the Provost’s Office, on the Committee on Standards and the Committee on Academic Affairs. She has led semesters abroad in China, Russia and Ireland. Dedicated to interdisciplinary teaching and learning, Professor McNally has taught courses in women’s studies, Russian area studies, Asian studies and environmental studies.
Many first-year students and their families may recognize her as the faculty member at Admissions programs eloquently describing the nature of the liberal arts academic program at Hobart and William Smith. The Geneva community knows her as an active participant with summer theatrical productions and a volunteer with the Community Lunch Program, Trinity After School Tutoring Program, the Children’s Garden as well as other civic endeavors.
A graduate of a coordinate women’s college – Douglass College in New Jersey – Professor McNally holds a Ph.D. from SUNY Binghamton and a master’s from Claremont.
On the occasion of Orientation in late August, McNally – a supporter of the critical importance of academic advising and a passionate advocate for students – gave this advice to the new first-years: “Get at us. Use us well.”
