The Hobart golf team produced its two lowest 18-hole team scores in the Liberty League Tournament at the par 72 Potsdam Town & Country Club this weekend. Sophomore Ben Ayres led the way, finishing eight over par for the tournament.
Ayres fired a two-over 74 on Saturday and carded a 78 today to finish 12th in the 41-golfer field. His Saturday total is the lowest round by a Statesman this season. First-year Matt Johnson was the second Hobart player in the clubhouse, turning in rounds of 82 and 76 to tie for 22nd place. Sophomore Dillon Sass (80-79-159), junior Steven Dougherty (86-77-163), and junior Sam Garivaltis (81-88-169) rounded out the Statesmen contingent.
Skidmore won the event by 13 strokes, rushing out to an 11-stroke lead after day one, and holding off Rensselaer on the second day. The Thoroughbreds (583) had three of the top five golfers in the field, while the Engineers (596) had two of the top five. The University of Rochester came in third overall at 616, followed by Clarkson (623), St. Lawrence (625), Hobart College (627) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (783).
The top four teams, Skidmore, Rensselaer, Rochester, and Clarkson, will reconvene in the spring to play another 36 holes for the conference championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Hobart will be back on the links on Oct. 1-2 when the Statesmen compete in the ECAC Metro Upstate Championship at Blue Heron Hills.
