2004 FORECAST: Women's Soccer To Reign In Rochester
WPSL Selects Rochester for Expansion Franchise

(San Francisco — 3/8/04) The Women's Premier Soccer League has selected Rochester as the home for their newest expansion franchise. The Rochester Reign will begin play this spring in the Eastern Division of the WPSL. “Rochester's rich history of support for soccer makes the city an ideal location for expansion. We feel that the Reign will be an immediate success and look for great things on and off the field from the organization,” says Jerry Zanelli, commissioner of the WPSL.

The Reign will be owned and operated by local businesswoman, Jami Dansingburg. She is president of Profile Sports Group, the organization that spearheaded the WUSA exhibition game at Frontier Field this past spring between the Washington Freedom and New York Power. “We couldn't be more excited about the opportunities afforded by the WPSL and their decision to select us for entry into the league,” comments Dansingburg. “The success of the league out west and the quality of player the league attracts will elevate women's soccer in Rochester to the next level.”

Dansingburg has been working for the last few months to develop sponsor support and attract world-class players to Rochester. Negotiations with Rochester native Abby Wambach to make a guest player appearance for the team are underway with her agent. “Abby's National team schedule is incredibly grueling with most of their training done on the west coast but Abby is excited about the possibility of lending a hand to promote the women's game in Rochester,” comments Dansingburg.

The WPSL (a 20 team league) is recognized as North America's top women's development organization. The WPSL gives the nation's best college players the opportunity to play alongside established international players and professionals while maintaining their collegiate eligibility. The WPSL was formed in 1998. It is sanctioned by the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA) as an affiliate of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the ruling body of soccer in the United States and FIFA the world's ruling body for soccer. Some of the well-known players in the league include Brandi Chastain, Sissi of Brazil, and Keri Sanchez.

In addition to the women's premier team, the Reign players and coaches will be developing a girl's youth program and academy under the Rochester Futbol Club's youth program. “The opportunity to develop a girls program has been a major consideration for years but we were unable to find the right leadership for the program. With the Reign, we have found an organization that possesses the knowledge, commitment and experience to immediately establish a successful girls program,” adds Nelson Cupello, president of the Rochester Futbol Club. “We are thrilled about the potential for this partnership.”

The Reign's home venue will be determined within the next couple of weeks, along with the team's finalized schedule. Their opponents will consist of Eastern Conference teams the Massachusetts Stingers (Boston, MA), Steel City Sparks (Pittsburgh, PA), Rhode Island Rays (Providence, RI), New England Mutiny (Springfield, MA), and Maryland Pepsi Pride (Baltimore, MD). The season runs from May 1 through Aug. 1, culminating in a National Championship playoff to include Northern Division teams from California and Utah, along with Southern Division opponents in California, Colorado, Nevada, and Texas.
